Jing Quek

Jing Quek, a Singaporean photographer who graduated with a BA in Fine Arts (Photography) from the SVA, School of Visual Arts, New York, takes truly amazing group photos. Every single person in his photos have a specific purpose and all his shots are incredibly composed and choreographed.

With shiny-eyed optimism and close interaction with everyday people, Jing combines his eye for subtle gestures and expressions with a tropical color palette and the classical formality of the tableau, instilling the colourful character of his subjects in his images. Utilizing a healthy dose of kitsch and humor to disarm viewers' expectations, Jing explores the social instinct of people to form communities and identities, exploring cultural quirks and cultural stereotypes along the way. Jing's appreciation of cultural references and authentic environments, coupled with strong conceptual direction, help to create contemporary mythologies, fictions and urban social narratives.

Li Wei

Li Wei

Li Wei  (李 日韦) was born in 1970 in Hubei, China. Based in Beijing, the Chinese artist's work is a mixture of performance art and photography that creates illusions of a sometimes dangerous reality.

Li Wei started off his performing series with ‘Mirroring’ and later on took off attention with his ‘Falls’ series which shows the artist with his head and chest embedded into the ground. Li Wei states that these images are not computer montages and works with the help of props such as mirror, metal wires, scaffolding and acrobatics.

"My work and artistic experience are characterised by a unique specificity and particularity. My artistic language is universal and deals with themes about contemporary politics and society using symbols understood by everyone in every part of the world. I am fascinated by the unstable and dangerous sides of art and I hope my works reflect these aspects." says the 37-year-old artist.

Besides creating photo-art, Li Wei also do installations. Check out some videos of his works to see how he did his art. Read more in this report by the Daily Mail.

Kim Joon

Kim Joon

"I am interested in tattoo as a metaphor for hidden desire or a kind of compulsion engraved into human consciousness. I see the skin, or in some cases the monitor, as an extension of a canvas."

Born in Seoul, Korea in 1966, Kim Joon is an artist who graduated with a Masters in Painting from Hongik University in Korea.

In Kim Joon’s works, the human body becomes the canvas. Tattooing is a social taboo in Korea, where it is preconceived to be carried only by criminals and prisoners. However, tattooing is fast becoming popular as the younger generation craves for more individuality. Yet, only qualified medical professionals can perform the procedures and many tattoo artists practise their trade in secret. Mocking the authorities, Kim Joon paints ironic and iconic imagery on his subjects. The individual is lost amidst the clamoring colors, patterns and brand images.

Kim Joon was originally a painter interested in exploring the dynamics and tensions that exist between the mental and physical realms. He first became interested in the process of tattooing in college and while serving a three year military term in Seoul, Korea. During his time in school and the military, he began to give home-made tattoos to his friends. When making these tattoos, Kim Joon used needle, thread, and Chinese ink. He would dip the thread into the Chinese ink and let it drip down the needle into the skin.

In Kim Joon's works, which he likes to describe as "paintings", the artist uses water based markers to create the designs. His process involves taking a piece of sponge and covering it in a layer of traditional cloth that is used as fabric liner in Korean sewing. The lining is then covered with very transparent fabric, and painted two coats of a skin colored hue.

Zhang Peng

Zhang Peng

"Art is not limited to any particular media. You can use many techniques to express an idea. I use photography because I often have ideas that I think would be lost in the process of painting."

Born 1981, Zhang Peng is an artist based in Beijing, China. Zhang Peng graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing in 2005. He has a background in painting but has increasingly embraced photography.

Zhang Peng's work centres on images of young girls in deceptively innocent settings. He photographs dolls with frozen expressions, against lush ambiguous backgrounds. His photo-based paintings of little girls are striking to behold -  beautiful yet slightly terrifying.

Zhang Peng describes his works as:
"In a broad sense, all of my works demonstrate a kind of oppression. If conditions allow, parents plan a future that they think will be good for their children. If they are not wealthy enough, they hope their children will have a skill and then they force them to develop it. As children grow up, their character is distorted by the inappropriate pressure of their parents and their schools. The appearances of my figures drift between real people and dolls. While the image is aesthetic, I also want to reinforce the strong sense of distortion."
